Your .htaccess file, with any Apache based server or hosting account is a very powerful tool that if you can learn to use for your advantage can help you complete many time consuming or difficult tasks with ease. How do you create one though for your web hosting account? This is a question that we hear often, and below is your solution using either cPanel or LPCP (Lunarpages Control Panel).

cPanel

Login to your cPanel with your user name and password, then once you have made it in, head over to your File Manager. Now the File Manager’s interface is a very familiar Windows-styled look at your files on your hosting account. You will want to click on your folder icon next to your public_html link next, that will take you to the insides of the public_html folder.

Inside you will see all your web site files. You need to scan down the page till you see the bold text, Create a New File. Click that and you should get in the upper-right corner a box with a few more setting to fill in. In the empty text box, put in .htaccess. Keep the drop down box on Text Document and then hit the Create button.

Now you have your .htaccess file inside of your public_html folder all with the help of cPanel and your helpful File Manger.

LPCP

To create a .htaccess file in LPCP, log into the LPCP, and then go to your File Manager. Click on the text link labeled, ” public_html” to navigate yourself inside the public_html folder.

In the empty text box to your upper-right type in .htaccess, make sure the drop down box is set to “File” and then hit the button labeled, “Create”.

Your .htaccess file will be created in your public_html folder on your LPCP powered account.

For more LPCP help, tips, tutorials and more, be sure to check out the web hosting wiki. Hundreds of guides have been published there to help you get more out of your web hosting account at Lunarpages.

Google AdWords Tips

We all know that getting your website set up is just the beginning of growing your online presence. For that reason, Lunarpages is dedicated to bringing you the information and resources you need to accelerate your business growth. Check out our website for information about our search engine marketing programs.

Recently we partnered with Google to send every Lunarpages customer a time-sensitive coupon to try Google AdWords. Be sure to check your mail and be sure to redeem the coupon quickly so you don’t forfeit it!

Our partner, LocalDirective, offers some tips to make best use of your coupon:

  • The structure of information in Google is: Campaigns > AdGroups > Text Ads & Keywords.
  • Before you get started, determine the geography you want to target. If you plan to target two different geographical areas, you will need to create a campaign for each one.
  • For each campaign, you will have at least a few AdGroups. Think about AdGroups as thematic, so that for each area of focus, you will want to have one adgroup. If you are a plumber, for instance, you may have AdGroups for Sewer & Drain Cleaning, Emergency Plumbing, Plumbing Fixture Installation, etc.
  • For each AdGroup, you will pick a number of keywords that you believe people might search for, using Google’s Keyword Tool to help you choose.
  • For each AdGroup, you will want to set up at least two text ads, and choose to have the ads rotate, so you can find out what appeals most to your audience.
  • For each text ad, instead of sending visitors to your home page, send them to the destination page that most closely matches the keywords in the AdGroup.
  • Finally, don’t forget to redeem your coupon and set a daily budget so you don’t spend more than you want to!
  • Then, sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labor! Best of luck for SPECTACULAR results!!!

Watching over your own grammar usage can be an easy thing from some, but might be a hard thing for others.  Thankfully though we have found two excellent resources for you to check your own web page’s content, e-mail reply or blog post before you make it public to the world.

After the Deadline

After the Deadline, created by Automattic, is a great web site and series of plugins (for both Firefox and WordPress) to make sure your grammar is top notch.  For quick grammar checking, we would suggest polishmywriting.com, the place they have put up to demonstrate how After the Deadline can save you from your writing misfortunes.

Spellchecker

The simply named Spellchecker from Spellchecker.net is a great resource to depend upon too.  It works in the same way After the Deadline does (just copy your text and paste it into the box) to have your own personal English teacher grade your writing skills.  You can quickly edit with their suggestions and advice, then copy back the text into your document.

We hope these two tools come in handy when you are checking your own grammar and spelling usage on the Web.

We ran this article in our newsletter this week.  In case you missed it :)

Did you know that you can use Gmail as a POP3 e-mail client? This way you can both send and receive mail as you@yourdomain.com through the Gmail interface.

If you have ever found yourself wanting to use Gmail more, but did not want to abandon your professional looking e-mail address this is the tutorial you have been looking for. We’ll share with you how you can setup Gmail to both send and receive e-mail to your non-Gmail e-mail address.

How to Receive Your Lunarpages E-mail in Gmail

Here is how you can add your e-mail account to Gmail.

From within Gmail, click on the Settings link, at the top of the page. Next, click on the Accounts and Import link.

Add a POP3 E-mail Account to Gmail

Now, you will want to click the button labeled, “Add POP3 email account”. That should pop up a new window where you can input the information about the e-mail account.

  1. Provide your e-mail address (you@yourdomain.com). Click the button labeled, “Next”.
  2. Next, give your user name, password, POP server (yourdomain.com or mail.yourdomain.com). There are other settings to choose from, but lets ignore them for now. Click the button labeled, “Add Account”.

Now, when you go to Settings > Accounts and Import you should see your e-mail account listed under Check mail using POP3. If you click the edit info link beside your account, you can then edit the other details we skipped before, such as:

  • Leave a copy of retrieved message on the server
  • Always use a secure connection (SSL) when retrieving mail
  • Label incoming messages
  • Archive incoming messages (Skip the Inbox)

So now Gmail is acting as the e-mail client looking for e-mail from yourgooglename@gmail.com and your hosted e-mail account. That covers receiving incoming mail from both accounts. What if you need to send mail as you@yourdomain.com?

How to Send E-mail in Gmail from Your Lunarpages Address

Here is how you can send mail using your personal e-mail account, rather than your Gmail e-mail address. From within Gmail, go to Settings, and then Accounts and Import. Under the Send mail as: section, click the button that reads, “Send mail from another address”.

Send Mail in Gmail Using Your Domain E-mail Address

This will pop up another window, where you can input your information.

  1. Give your name, as you want it to be seen as the sender when somebody gets an e-mail from you.
  2. Give your e-mail address you wish to send from, such as the one you setup using the previous steps above (you@yourdomain.com). Now, click the button labeled, “Next Step”.
  3. You then have the option to send mail one of two ways:
+ Send through Gmail (easier to set up)
+ Send through yourdomain.com SMTP servers (recommended for professional domains)
  4. You will then be e-mailed a message at this address to verify you are able to use it. To perform the verification click “Send Verification”. They will then send an e-mail to you@yourdomain.com with instructions on how to verify your address.

Once you complete the verification process, you should then be able to send mail as you@yourdomain.com too.

Now you have yet another option when it comes to picking which e-mail client you wish to use, out of the many choices there are out there today. Using Gmail with your Lunarpages POP3 hosted e-mail account gives you the ability to use the flexibility of Gmail with the reliable e-mail service you know and love here at Lunarpages.

Tip: Once you have set your e-mail up this way, you can enable a button on Gmail’s main interface that will let you manually check for new POP3 mail from your domain. Just go to the Google Labs section of Gmail, and enable the “Refresh POP Accounts” Gmail Google Labs feature.

Google AdSense Ads

In honor of the promotion we have going currently where ALL USA and Canadian Lunarpages clients get $100 in AdWords credits, we wanted to focus on some helpful tips to help you match your advertisements on your web to your content.  Thankfully, the Google AdSense team has come up with an easy solution called section targeting.  So what is it, and how can you put it in effect on your own web site?

The idea behind section targeting is to allow you to select a block of text and HTML content that you would like the Google AdSense ad bots to pay more attention to when it comes to deciding what type of ads go on your web site.

To get it set up, all you need to do is add a couple of HTML tags to your web site layout, on each page you have ads on.

<!– google_ad_section_start –>

Your important content goes here.

<!– google_ad_section_end –>

To learn more about section targeting, be sure to check out this Google AdSense tutorial on the issue.  I can tell you from experience, that it does make for more targeted Google AdSense advertising.

If you haven’t claimed your credits yet and you don’t have an existing AdWords account, email us!  Remember you MUST be a Lunarpages Hosting Customer so provide your domain name and make sure you qualify!

How does web hosting work

Web hosting is the way of storing all the information files that makes a website. It makes People being able to “find’ your website. Every page of a site needs to be stored as data files.
How does web hosting work ? Well, Web hosting works by storing these files on servers to be accessed by all kind of web browsers. Web hosting has become a large vesting industry now days and can be confusing to people who are starting a website, without and experience.

To start with, you need to select yourself a “fancy” domain name. Your domain will be the name of your new site so it’s best to try and choose something on topic, as short and as to the point you can make it. Then what is needed is to register your new domain name at the web hosting service provider that you choose so no one else will be able to use your chosen name.

Running a website requires a web host provider. Best is to imagine a website is like a piece of a virtual real estate. In order to set your site up, you’ll need a place, an address and a platform on which to build the site on. Web hosting providers are actually behaving like real estate agents, but of the on line environment.

In most cases, a web space is rented, rather on a yearly or quarterly basis, sometimes, on a monthly basis as well. The server it self to be used is a powerful computer that runs on specially configured high-speed connections. It has a high degree of firewall protection in place as well. Usually the subscriber package includes a website storage on the host server, together with email services and a domain registration, also an auto-responders. Some times you  can find packages that also offers shopping carts software and an access to add-on software applications that can be run on your website, subject to your needs.

When deciding on which web host to use, there are a couple of options to consider from in perspective of which operating platforms are available and what types of scripting languages are used. Operating platforms comes on 2 versions: Windows, and Linux. The Windows platform is designed to work on all Windows machine and operating systems. The Linux is designed specifically for web server applications. Scripting languages come in either PHP (hypertext preprocessor), Perl or ASP (active server pages). The type of operating platform you have will determine which scripting language is in use. The Windows platform uses ASP, but the Linux uses the Perl and PHP scripting languages. There are a few hosting companies provide both Windows and Linux platforms to their subscribing customers.

Free web hosting is another option available on which you can choose to host your site on. This is fine for personal use but not advisable if you want to set up a real business. Limited bandwidth allotments, generic domain names and limited site access make it difficult when trying to customize a professional business presence on the web. Also free web hosting service, usually do not offer a proper technical support or any reliable guarantee for the service. It is expected to fined your website down from time to time, what makes it less professional and reliable to count on as for the consumer part. Free web hosting service should be your last option if you are looking for a web hosting service for your business.

There are several ways to fined out how does web hosting works, and what type to use.
Since there are so many websites on line, for example: some of the subscribers purchase virtual, or shared hosting. That means that the host server’s directory is shared between a number of subscribers. Also there is an option of dedicated hosting, thats where a subscriber pays for the sole use of an individual web server. Usually large businesses are running their own databases and software applications operate from a dedicated server. Another type is the virtual servers, that are fine for those who are running a small business or setting up a site for personal use.

my domain is hosted on GoDaddy, and I’m hosting the website on different service. I’m forwarding the domain name to the address of the website.
Now I want to use a favicon on the website. I tried to put the icon on the root of the web hosting, but it didnt appear when I open the website from the domain name, it appears only if I opened it from the hosting link.

anyway to make it work without having to assign the icon with every single page?
Thank you

This is i came across while i wanted to register or own a website.

I’ve been looking around but I’m looking for a fairly cheap price. The lowest I’ve found is a one year plan for /year

I cannot find the database location for the website I am trying to put up. Whenever I try to do the mysqli_connect.php, it does not find the host. Is it www.thewebsite.com/phpMyAdmin or ftp.thewebsite.com or is it something different? If someone could direct me to where I could find the information on the database location using yahoo, then I would really appreciate it.

Recently I’ve been thinking of making a website, I know what a domain is and what web hosting is. Im just wondering whether or not I need web hosting and a domain or I can just buy the domain. As this is my first time actually making a website. If it matters I was going to buy it through go daddy.

I want to be able to host friend / small business domains on my server for hosting. On my Ubuntu (LAMP) server, Bind9 was installed by default. Does this mean that I (after properly configuring bind) will be able to be used as a name server for domain hosting?

also, is it allowed to put ads on my website with doing this free? what would you reccomend being the best free host? and domain?

I cannot find anything that supports Lightroom 2 web galleries on a website. Or it seems really expensive.

I have my own domain and hosting package for my online business, I am thinking of doing this to keep intouch with family over seas, and will be a better connection than instant messengers video chat, no lagging. I have a online business, so I figured I can use that hosting pkg and domain and make a password protected page.

I need to get a website up for my church again. I used Yahoo to build my site, but I want to go to a different service becasue I can’t my new payment information in their systems (it keeps giving me this temporary error message) and their customer service makes me wait hours on the phone.

If I buy a domain from GoDaddy.com for a year, does that mean I log into their website and upload pages to my website? Or do I have to find yet another service to host my site? I am a bit confused.

I just want to buy the .com for a year, and log in and upload my site, etc.

I want to start a domain registration and web hosting business.

I need to know if there is any site that will allow me to host my own site while being able to run my own ads; allowing me to make profit.

I am looking to start a business and is shopping for a domain name service and hosting as well and it is important that I deal with a reliable provider and not any fly-by-night service. Would any one happen to know any good ones? besides yahoo and godaddy.. even though I am thinking about going with either one of those two I just wanted to see if there are any others out there

I just want to make sure I am going to register a reliable domain service.
